Retinol is a well know product that is often recommended to use on the face, however many of us are still asking- what exactly does retinol do? With so many anti-aging products on the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed not knowing which is right for you.

What does retinol so for your face?

If you are new to retinol, it is a derivative of Vitamin A that helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and even helps with acne. Retinol works to improve your skins texture and tone to help your skin radiate naturally. This happens by the retinol being applied topically, directly on the skin, which then helps the skin cells to increase their production while unclogging your pores.

Retinol can act like an exfoliator which will help increase the collagen production in the area by going deeper into the skin to reach the layers below the surface. Collagen is like the skin’s scaffolding but as we age our natural production of collagen decreases. By stimulating additional collagen production, we effectively help our skin remain young and plump.

How should retinol be used?

You may have heard before that retinol should not just start being used every day right out the gate. This can be true depending on the amount of actual retinol in the product. It is best used at night and should be something you start off by using once a week and build up to multiple days (potentially every night) as your skin adjusts to it. By using it at night, you skin will have the down time to take it in fully. Should you have any adverse reactions to it, you will not have to struggle throughout the day with any irritation.

Retinol is a strong ingredient that can be tough for sensitive skin. A thin layer will allow your skin to acclimate to the new product. Although this will take a bit longer for you to see results, you will be happy during the process to smoother skin. Retinol really helps to maintain your appearance while helping to slow the aging process for your face.

Some of the potential side effects of using retinol include:

  • Redness

  • Skin Irritation

  • Dry or Peeling Skin

  • Sensitivity

  • Acne Flare Up (usually initially as the product is clearing out your pores)

For these reasons, we recommend starting slow and building up your usage at night. For some products there are also lower concentrations of the retinol that you can start with and then switch to the higher concentration after the first product is used up. See the next part for an example of just that.

It is important to note, that you do want to take special care to not get any product in your eyes. Should this happen you do want to rinse your eyes immediately to clear out the product and then give them a rest.
