Chemical peels have been around the aesthetic world for a while now, so odds are good you have heard of them. It may sound a bit odd however to think peeling your skin would actually be beneficial. Being in Florida, a peel is usually the result of someone being in our beautiful sunshine far too long with no protection. Thankfully we are not talking about that kind of peel! Instead, a chemical peel actually helps the look and feel of your skin- although staying out of the sun while you are doing this process is still a must!
What does a chemical peel do for you?
A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment used most commonly on the face to address signs of aging. Chemical peels can also be applied to the back of hands and neck to address the signs of again on these areas as well. These treatments work for all types of skin, however should be conducted by a professional to ensure the best possible results.
After the peeling has concluded, the face appears refreshed- smoother, more even tone and texture, and more youthful. The results are often dramatic and very welcome. It is always fun to take before and after photos to really see the difference side by side!
Chemical peels treat a variety of concerns at one time. Some of the most common benefits include softening fine lines and wrinkles, treating acne and acne scars, evening out skin tone and texture, and exfoliating on a deeper level. Perich Aesthetics offers a variety of chemical peels to meet different needs resulting in different benefits.
What is the process of a chemical peel?
A medical grade solution is applied to the desired area of treatment by a professional. There are many variations to make up the solution to achieve different results. These solutions go deeper in the skin than what a face wash or moisturizer would to, causing a reaction to the skin in which the outer layers start to peel away to fresh skin beneath. It is important to work with an experienced professional who understands the different options to make sure your specific needs are met.
The skin will start to flake or peel typically within 48 hours of the treatment and usually will only continue for up to a week. Although skin is peeling, this is actually dead skin on the surface that is holding onto dirt, oil, and debris preventing air from getting to the cells below. It is important to note right away that you should not actually peel the skin that starts to flake after the solution procedure as it could cause permanent scarring.
There are different levels of peels which means that you can have little to no peeling of the skin or as described above, the full face can peel. Generally speaking there are three depths of peels; light peel, a medium peel, and a deep peel. The deeper the peel, the less often it should be done, whereas a light peel can actually be done every few weeks if recommended.

How do I care for my skin after a peel?
After your peel you will be given specific instructions based on your skin and which peel you go with that need to be followed. Making sure to moisturize as directed is very important. It is also super important to not actually peel the skin that starts to flake over the next few days as is can cause permanent damage. Think of this like peeling gel or dip powder off your nails- just because you can doesn’t mean you should!
You should be careful about your sun exposure as well, keeping it to a minimum as your skin will be more prone to burning than normal since you did just remove the top layer! If you need to be outside in the sun, you absolutely should use a higher SPF made from quality ingredients. It is important that you always use sunscreen with Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. These are naturally occurring ingredients that create a thin layer to block the sun rays from penetrating into the skin. This is very important and you can read more about this here.
