Why does the face age and what can we do about it?

Facial aging is an occurrence that is hard to avoid- try as we may! Gravity and time have a way of not stopping despite our quest for a healthy lifestyle but understanding just what is going on will help you to identify what your options really are other than some magic potions TikTok might be tempting you with.

Dr. Tayna Perich explains:

Most people think of facial aging in terms of sagging skin. What we fail to recognize is that it’s actually the calvarium and facial bones that actually recess throughout the decades with minimal changes in our 30s, greater changes in our 40s 50s 60s and so on.

These changes can be analogous to having a beautiful dining room table with a tablecloth over it where the table slowly shrinks in size. Eventually you have a very large tablecloth on the coffee table, which clearly no longer looks presentable. The only thing we can do about this problem is deep in Sculptra injections over the bone or Radiesse.

Sculptra® is one of our favorite products since it stimulates the body to produce its own type 1 collagen over time, giving you a permanent result, unlike filler which completely dissolves over time. Sculptra® fights wrinkles and sagging skin and reduces fine lines for a more youthful appearance. You will see the best results eight weeks after initial treatment.

Radiesse is a trusted product that is specifically for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds in the lower face and can also be used for your hands. The results are natural looking while providing an instant lift and definition which can last for a year or more. Radiesse also helps to stimulate the collagen production in the area. The unique formula of Radiesse produces a lift below deep wrinkles, lines, and folds that looks natural and fresh.

Both of these options are great for treating that facial bone recess. What about with sagging skin or loss of volume where there were plump cheeks like a baby? Dr. Perich continues:

There’s also atrophy and sagging of the facial fat pads. This we can augment with facial fillers and Scuptra. For over a decade we have used hyaluronic acid fillers to augment facial volume. And although this might look great the first time you have it done, subsequent injectable fillers don’t tend to look and move as natural in the face, leading to that puffy filler face look that we can all recognize.

Or other patients who look good at rest but the moment their muscles of facial expression start moving, you can tell something just doesn’t quite look right. That’s because the facial muscles are attempting to move and glide in different planes of motion over different molecule sizes that have been sequentially injected over time.

At one year, the previous filler isn’t completely gone, so we inject more and now we have old stuff still there and new stuff going away creating a topographical map of the face with bumps all over. This is why it doesn’t move naturally compared to someone who doesn’t have filler in their face.

Same concept happens with threads in respect to vector movements of the face. Threads are meant to lift and increase collagen in the face, however they only do this in one directional vector. The muscles of the face move 360° in all different directions, therefore threads are going to give an unnatural look no matter where they’re at in the face.

Dermal fillers and threads can be a great option for some people. Dermal fillers are a leading non-invasive, anti-aging solution to instantly smooth visible lines, wrinkles, and nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers rely on a naturally occurring compound called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is found in the body, to restore a youthful look. HA helps maintain skin hydration, fullness and elasticity. With age, people generally produce less HA, collagen and elastin, which all contribute to keeping skin plump and hydrated.

Our doctors and practitioners inject the dermal fillers into soft tissues to reduce visible signs of aging, including facial lines, wrinkles and creases. The biocompatible gels, which are gradually and safely absorbed into the body, increase the volume and lift of your skin.

Perich Aesthetics surgeons offer minimally invasive nonsurgical thread (MINT) lift, which addresses signs of aging that impact the mid-face area. These changes, such as sagging skin, are caused by gravity, so this procedure strives to create a sharper jawline and V-line with minimal incisions in the hairline. This procedure relies on absorbable sutures to visibly lift and rejuvenate your complexion, tightening the skin and stimulating the body’s natural healing response to infuse the surgical site with rejuvenating collagen.

Unlike a traditional facelift surgery, the MINT procedure causes minimal scarring and requires little downtime. You’ll enjoy subtle, natural results that create a younger, more alert appearance. In the weeks and months after the procedure, the skin will continue to look firmer and more toned as a result of the influx of collagen to the treated area.

Dr. Perich wants to make sure it is clear what the goal of Aesthetics actually is:

The goal of Aesthetics is not to say oh wow her filler and threads look amazing. The goal of aesthetics is to age with grace.

My goal for my patience is for people to say wow he or she is blessed with great genes and looks amazing for their age!

Hard to argue with that!

There are many additional aesthetic treatments and procedures you can consider when looking for the best solution for your unique face. Other popular options that we really like here at Perich Aesthetics go deeper to address things like sagging skin, discoloration, sun spots, skin texture, and more. Let’s talk about two of our favorite of those options:

Morpheus8:

Morpheus8 treatment combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to remodel and contour the face and body. This fractional treatment penetrates deep into the skin and stimulates collagen production for a smoother and sleeker appearance.

Morpheus8 can be used on any areas that can benefit from sub-dermal renewal. Areas of the face and body that exhibit wrinkles, discoloration or acne scarring are suitable for treatment. The most commonly treated areas include the face and neck, as well as the abdomen which is beneficial for tightening loose skin with underlying fatty tissue.

Co2 Laser Skin Resurfacing:

Laser Skin Resurfacing can smooth the complexion and remove imperfections for a fresh, youthful glow. Improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, uneven skin tone, skin texture irregularities or facial scars.

Perich Aesthetics surgeons use the Candela CO2RE® Laser to enhance skin tone and texture through skin resurfacing. This non-invasive procedure reduces the effects of aging and sun on the skin, smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, and surgical and acne scars by removing the skin’s outer layers and allowing radiant new skin cells to shine through.

This procedure can resolve the symptoms of certain dermatological conditions. For example, skin resurfacing is often used for clients who have rosacea, deep folds, and wrinkles in the skin, warts, spider veins, and blemishes. Laser treatment can also improve the appearance of sunspots, sagging skin, uneven tone, and enlarged pores.

Dr. Perich loves these treatments but has found there is one part of the face that has not gotten much attention over the years for treatments:

OK, so we’ve got something to kind of address the bone, we’ve got skin tightening procedures like Morpheus and CO2 Laser. Morpheus, a type of radio frequency micro needling, is considered a type of collagen induction therapy. This can be combined with PRP to increase collagen in the face at a more rapid rate. So we have all these things to address the skin, fat, bone, but nothing to address muscle… We all know that muscle when not used atrophies… if you don’t use it you lose it!

That is why we are super excited to be the first practice in Tampa Bay to offer the brand new EMFACE treatment! EMFACE is a needle-free and non-invasive face treatment that builds muscle and reduces facial fat at the same time. What’s really cool with EMFACE, is that you can come in on your lunch break and be back to work with no one having any idea you just had a treatment! Think of this like face yoga- how cool?!

EMFACE provides amazing results! EMFACE is a novel face treatment, that improves facial contour, rejuvenates the support of facial tissue, improves muscle tone and density, improves skin texture, sagginess and smoothness without filler injections, sutures, and surgery.

By combining High Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Technology (HIFES) with radiofrequency (RF), EMFACE builds facial muscle and reduces facial fat for more youthful facial contour. The device can trigger thousands of muscle contractions that strengthen and tone facial muscles. The radiofrequency energy also stimulates collagen production.

HIFES technology has been clinically tested for safety and efficiency through several clinical studies. This is the first of it’s kind technology to be utilized for facial aesthetics. Studies have shown that patients enjoy up to 37% of wrinkle reduction, 23% of more lift and up to 30% of muscle tone. The excitement is very real.

EMFACE represents the “next step forward” in facial rejuvenation because it’s a non-invasive, needle-free, and quick lunchtime procedure that brings noticeable results.

EMFACE treatment enhances and rejuvenates the face. Results are comparable to Botox and fillers. This quick 20-minute treatment is painless, non-invasive, and needle-free. EMFACE:

  • increases facial muscle density and muscle tone;

  • reduces facial fat, jowls, double chin;

  • lifts the entire face, cheeks and brows;
