What is Dermaplaning?
You have seen dermaplaning offered with facials at spas but don’t really know what the heck it is. Going to an aesthetician can feel overwhelming with all the new words you have to learn that frankly can make you feel uneasy about doing anything. We get it! We felt the exact same way, but if you are here that means you are willing to learn and we are very excited to teach you!
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a non-invasive technique performed by a Dermatologist or a Licensed Aesthetician to scrape off vellus hair, also know as “peach fuzz” as well as the top layer of the skin. This exfoliates the skin without doing too deep as it just reaches the top layers of the skin. This means it also gets rid of any stubborn dirt or makeup clogging the pores at the surface. The procedure will leave you with glowing, smooth, healthy, and radiant skin.
Many people think that dermaplaning is just shaving however having this treatment done actually goes deeper than shaving alone. Although the tool used in dermaplaning, called a dermatone or scalpel, looks similar to a razor, it is a more precise tool crafted at a specific angle for a finer removal of the dead skin on the top layers of your skin. When men shave their face, they are getting the hair and less of the dead skin. A regular razor for women’s legs should not be used on your face.
Dermaplaning is a perfect procedure to have a few days before a big event. As with most spa treatments, it is good to let you skin breath for a day or two afterwards before applying makeup. Dermaplaning can cause the face to be more red immediately afterwards and often people say their face “feels weird” right after- but in a good way! After about 48 hours you will see the real glow of radiant smooth skin free from any peach fuzz and ready for photos!
Can you add dermaplaning to a facial?
Most facials you could opt to add dermaplaning done in the same visit. Typically the facial would be conducted first followed by the dermaplaning. If you are having any extractions done, then it may be wise to wait for another visit to have dermaplaning done, however our trained professionals will be able to advise you to the best course of action to meet your specific needs. You can also opt to have the dermaplaning done only in specific areas of your face rather than the whole thing.
You would not want to have a peel and dermaplaning done in the same visit however. A peel goes deeper than dermaplaning and also removes that top layer of dead skin, therefore dermaplaning is unnecessary when getting a peel. Peels do take longer to show their final results and in the process, that top layer of skin peels away from your face in flakes (that you should NOT pull at!) thus on days 3-7 your face will look a bit funky while the magic happens. Peels are great to do a week or more before an event when you have some time to stay at home out of the sun and public view.
How often should you dermaplane your face?
Dermaplaning takes about 2-3 weeks of dead skin off of your face, therefore you could consider having this done monthly. Many people opt to have this done every other month, or even quarterly as a quick refresh for their face. Since there is little downtime so to speak, it is easy to fit in your schedule. You could go to work all day, pop in for an end of day treatment, and be back to work the next day with no one being any wiser! Although they will probably compliment how fresh you are looking!
This minimal downtime is one of the big selling points for many people. As mentioned above, a peel will go deeper but does require longer to stay out of the limelight. Busy people can reap the benefits of dermaplaning to exfoliate the face and maintain that radiance with more treatments in the year than you would do with a peel. Both treatments take about the same amount of time in office to complete, although a peel is not a way to get rid of that peach fuzz.
Of course, you will want to talk with your professional to determine the optimal time between treatments for your specific needs.
Who should NOT get dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is great for all ethnicities and safe for all skin types. There are specific times when you would not want to have a dermaplane, like if you have a sunburn or rash. Any cause for irritation to your skin right before your dermaplaning appointment would be cause to call and reschedule. Dermaplaning at this time would only make things worse, and could really hurt like the dickens!
In addition, people with acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea on their face should not have dermaplaning done. Again, you don’t want to agitate a skin problem further that already exists. If you skin has any inflammation, dermaplaning is probably not your best choice, however there are lots of other treatment options we would be happy to discuss with you to aid in each of those specific things.
