More and more men are discovering why women have been using Botox and other wrinkle relaxers for years. Thus the rise of the term “Brotox” has begun to pop up- it’s a fun way to say that men are getting Botox too. Men age just like women with wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is the quick fix to turn back the hands of time or prevent them from taking hold at an earlier age.

Especially living in Florida, we all get more sun than the average Joe… we are at the beach, on the boat, taking the dog for long walks, and generally spending a full 12 months outside with sun gloriously raining down on us for more hours than most parts of the country. Unfortunately this means aging on our faces happens much quicker as well. Lots of sun exposure without religious use of quality sunscreen will lead to the formation of wrinkles.

Sunscreen is definitely your daily line of defense, but aging will still happen and there is something we can do about it. Enter wrinkle relaxers. There are actually quite a few wrinkle relaxers (or neuromodulator as the scientific term) on the market these days than just Botox. Advancements in technology and additional research has brought to life some amazing products that work wonders. Consider Botox as the name brand original that got the whole movement going and the new ones you may have never heard of all the offshoots- targeting specific things or using alternative ingredients.

Why Should Men Consider Botox?

You eat well. Hit the gym or workout regularly. You drink your water and remember to put on sunscreen when you hit the beach. You enjoy looking and feeling but the reality is that you are getting older and there’s no gym for your wrinkles. Wrinkles on your face are one of the biggest signs of aging that happen to everybody. When you smile, frown, laugh, and talk, wrinkles are forming through that movement. Over time, those areas that move start to permanently show wrinkles. Lines and wrinkles can leave you looking angry, tired, and older.

If you have noticed forehead wrinkles, frown lines, or crows feet (those lines at the corner of your eyes) then Botox or another wrinkle relaxer is something to consider if you would like to decrease their appearance. What is great about wrinkle relaxers is that they temporarily treats lines and wrinkles at the source, relaxing the underlying muscles of the face to create a smooth, refreshed finish.

Expression lines are softened and smoothed, awakening your face and taking years off of your appearance. It is easy for you or your doctor to start to see potential problem areas forming and determine where a small amount of Botox could help prevent those wrinkles from forming in the first place.

In addition to cosmetic benefits, doctors and practitioners can inject Botox®, Jeuveau™, and Xeomin® to treat health conditions including frequent migraines, extreme sweating, TMJ discomfort, blepharospasms and various muscular twitches, and some specific bowel and bladder conditions. Oh yes, it’s more than meets the eye! Men find that these remedies for muscular twitches and extreme sweating to be really beneficial to their daily life the most commonly.

What is Botox?

Botox® is an FDA-approved procedures for treating the appearance of aging that is non-surgical., and and it is non-permanent. Doctors and nurse practitioners inject Botox to diminish visible lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement and tension in the face and neck. Botox is considered a neuromodulator and has been around for years now.

What exactly does Botox do?

Neuromdulators are used to stop nerve signals from telling muscles to contract. Basically, it is the technical term and BOTOX® is the brand name. The formulations contain purified proteins that immobilize muscles by blocking the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. As a result, the targeted facial muscles relax, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles created by the contraction or tensing of specific facial and neck muscles. The targeted areas of skin look smoother and more relaxed.

Botox® neuromodulators are created from a refined form of Botulinum toxin A. It temporarily treats lines and wrinkles at the source, relaxing the underlying muscles of the face to create a smooth, refreshed finish. Botox essentially weakens the muscle it is injected into. This then causes the muscle to not be able to function as highly thus preventing the wrinkles from forming in the first place or smoothing out the area if there are wrinkles and fine lines already.

How quickly does Botox work?

Botox® takes up to 7-10 days to show 100% of the treatment result. Patients will see the full effects in two weeks and expect them to last up to 3-to-4 months on average and sometimes longer. Regular treatments can extend the longevity of results but depend on your individual treatment plan developed with your practitioner. Some patients with especially dense muscles, for example, may require more treatments. Women often see results more quickly than men.

What are the other wrinkle relaxers other than Botox?

There are two other wrinkle relaxers we highly recommend: Jeuveau™ and Xeomin®. Botox®, Jeuveau™, and Xeomin® work in a similar fashion to one another and rely on the same active ingredient to produce a more youthful and rejuvenated look. Botox®, Jeuveau™, and Xeomin® cost about the same amount to treat a comparable area, although they have a slightly different mode of action.

What is Jeuveau™:

Jeuveau™ is almost the same as Botox®. Jeuveau™ works on the same principle as Botox® to smooth out the creases in the face, lines, frown and crow’s feet. Patients can see an improvement in lines and creases as early as 2-3 days.

Both Jeuveau™ and Botox® are neuromodulators created from a refined form of Botulinum toxin A. Botox® has been the gold standard in treating facial lines and wrinkles for years. Jeuveau™ is being hailed as “Newtox.” While both Botox® and Jeuveau™ are created from the same basic neurotoxin, Jeuveau™ has the benefit of using the newest technology and methods of creation that were not available when Botox® entered the scene. Jeuveau™ is the first neuromodulator to be:⠀

▪️ Approved by the FDA solely for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles⠀
▪️ Less expensive⠀
▪️ Works more quickly than Botox®

What is Xeomin®?

Don’t be mad or look mad! Xeomin® is a form of incobotulinumtoxin A that is used to block muscle movement in areas that contribute to wrinkles. It is used in the forehead, typically between the brows to soften frown lines. Sometimes body has the ability to become immune to other neurotoxins like Botox® injected too many times in patient’s forehead, rendering its muscle-freezing abilities useless. When your Botox® treatment has started to lose its magic touch, rest assured that you have another option in Xeomin®.

What are the potential side effects of wrinkle relaxers?

All three injectables are relatively safe treatments with few contraindications. Adults from all age groups can reap the benefits of the treatments with full understanding of how the products work and the outcomes to be expected.

Other possible side-effects include headache, bruising at injection site, dropped brows or eyelid weakness, red or irritated skin or development of a rash or hives, and moderate discomfort.

Our doctors, however, discourage the use of both treatments in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Some patients experience swelling and redness at the injection site immediately following treatment. If this side-effect occurs, it usually disappears after 10 minutes.
