The beauty of our world is in our vast array of choices- we get to pick between just about anything we can think of. Cars, foods, pets, places to live, and our doctors all come with the freedom of choice, but making a good decision can be hard to know! When it comes to your health and wellness, choosing a great place and people to work with truly does make a difference.
When you have decided that to take the big leap and get the surgery done you have been thinking about forever, do you know how to make sure the surgeon you are working with is the best bet? There are so many things that go into finally saying yes to yourself, we often don’t know how to choose the right surgeon. This is such an important step! Let’s go over what you need to consider and why each thing is so important.
1. Have you checked your surgeon’s credentials?
Making sure you are working with someone who is experienced and well trained is vital! It is important to ask for the before and after photos from the specific surgeon you are going to be working with. These photos can do so much more explaining than many words can do. They should have an album full of photos! What are their actual results? Where did they get their training done? Do the keep doing regular training and stay on the pulse to new technologies and techniques? Reputable surgeons not only will have these things readily available but will have no problem answering any questions you may have.
2. Does your surgeon specialize in this procedure?
Making sure your surgeon specializes in your specific procedure is very important! Dr. Tanya Perich with Perich Aesthetics is the leading eyelid surgeon from around Tampa Bay Florida offering a state-of-art blepharoplasty (surgical repair or reconstruction of an eyelid) done with precision. Dr. Perich started her career as an eye doctor and evolved into the world of aesthetics after seeing and experiencing the problems people were having by not working with someone who intimately knew the eyes and thus the face.
For this example, the eyes are far more intricate than many realize. The inner works extend far beyond the eyeball itself to underneath the eye and around the whole eye socket. Having an aesthetician who is not also an eye doctor do any “superficial” work around your eye, like under eye fillers, can have negative effects years later. Dr. Perich actually know this first hand as she had someone else help her with under eye HA filler done years ago only to be in an on going process now to get it dissolved.
This is all to say that any area of your body has far more inner workings going on that meets the surface. Your surgeon needs to be a specialist with intimate knowledge of the complete area being worked on to yield results that not only have immediate results but long term success as well.
3. Have you had a consultation?
For any surgery you are having, you absolutely must have a consultation with the actual surgeon who will be preforming your surgery. This one may feel more obvious, however it is still worth noting. Of course whenever you go into an office of any medical type there will be additional staff that you will speak to and work with. Feeling comfortable with the whole team is very important. You do not need to meet with every single person who may be there the day of your surgery but you do need meet your surgeon.
You can and should come with a list of your questions- even if it’s just to clarify things you feel pretty good about. A good question to always ask is “How many of these procedures have you done in the past?” or “Do you think there is anything I personally should be concerned about?” Anything that is on your mind is a valid question. But do write these out and give them thought beforehand as it is easy to forget them all when you are actually at your consultation.
4. Have you checked their reviews and/or social media accounts?
We all live by reviews in this day thanks much to Amazon.com. Checking out reviews from multiple platforms can give you a better sense of how things have gone in the past. Don’t just look in one place however and take super negative reviews with a grain of salt. If you see the same type of concern pop up more than once, then it is worth asking about to the office.
It may sound silly at first to check their social media accounts, but often this is where people will give their honest opinions about their procedures. This is especially true for aesthetic procedures or procedures with an aesthetic element (blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery for example can be considered both medically necessary and aesthetic). People who love their results will often comment on their doctors socials when they post about that procedure. Video testimonials are becoming bigger and bigger and are a great way to see actual patients and their results.
If someone is bold enough to rave about their surgeon on social media, then that doctor is doing something right. Often people don’t want to admit to having things done. You can even potentially reach out directly to someone who has worked with them, although keep that short and sweet to avoid being too creepy!
This is like asking around to your friends- which is also a great thing to do. Referrals tend to run our world and for good reason! However, always make sure you hear from more than 1 other person both good and bad!
Attention to detail is such a key factor that often gets overlooked. You never want to feel like you are on a factory line pumping out surgeries! Make sure you get the individual attention you deserve from a professional you can trust has your best interests in mind. We are always happy to schedule a consultation with you here at Perich Aesthetics to see if we might be a good fit together. Please feel free to call 727-777-2640 today to see how we can help you!
